Evaluation Question 1 – In what ways does your media product use, develop and challenge forms of conventions of real media products?
Evaluation Question
1 – In what ways does your media product use, develop and challenge forms of
conventions of real media products?
Our plot is
based around the death of one of the main characters in the opening sequence,
where he is shown to be laying on the floor dead. We did this on purpose to
create tension in mystery in the first two minutes, this would draw the
audience into the full film as they would want to find out what happened. The
use of credits over the rolling clip is used in many other films and informs
the audience who the characters are and what the name of the film is while the
clip is still playing. The title and credits were placed over the lesser
important scenes in order to not draw attention away from the key scenes and
action in other parts.
The Plot is set out to be non-linear and shows the
future first, as It shows the character dying, the full film would be set before
the opening sequence was and will then join back on to the present, this being
the title sequence.
The use of
low key lighting portrays the genre of psychological horror in scenes such as
the outdoor scene and the scene where the characters run back inside. This
creates a sense of panic, claustrophobia and mystery, all of which match the
genre. Due to the use of a dark figure whose face is never shown in the film, it
again matches the genre as it represents an antagonist which are commonly used
in other psychological horror films. Such as ‘A nightmare on Elm Street’ and ‘Friday
the 13th’.
The Dolly
in/zoom out shot used on Luke portrays his shock when he hears the bang
outside. This shot is commonly used in many horror films and focuses all the
attention on the character.
Throughout our film, we used a number of tracking
shots and hand held shots. These types of shots show panic and focus on
individual characters presenting their emotions.
Fast paced
editing is used when the characters hear the bang and run out of the house and
the change in pace shows when something important occurs in the scene. It also
builds up tension by changing angles and shots to reveal more in a scene. This draws
the audience in and keeps them entertained and on the edge of their seat, this
supports the ideology of the theme of psychological horror.
Throughout the film, the soundtrack used included different sections that both increased and decreased in pace, we matched these up to the corresponding parts in the film to create the best effect. A 5 second silence is used after Luke has been stabbed, which creates an eerie effect, alerts the audience and puts the main focus on the current event in the scene. Different sound effects such as the distortion and the eerie sound creates an atmosphere and puts the audience into a state of tension, foreshadowing the idea that something is about to happen. This links back to the genre and develops forms used in real media products.

Question 5 Evaluation
Question 5 - Evaluation
How did you attracts/address your audience?
From the results of our post-film questionnaire, we know that we reached our intended audience for our media product.
From the responses given, we found that the audience agreed that the genre of our film was psychological horror due to them stating ‘Yes’ in the questionnaire. They also answered ‘Yes’ to the question, ‘Do you understand the storyline?’ in a pre-production questionnaire.
We found that the audience felt that the film reflected the original storyline, that we published in an earlier questionnaire. All of the responses stated that the film reflected the storyline.
We also asked if the film relates to the certificate of our film of 15-19. Most of the responses from the questionnaire stated ‘Yes’. This shows that we appealed to our target audience by finding the correct certificate.
When writing the script, we added elements that would only be suited specifically to our target audience. We added strong language into the characters dialogue so the target audience of 15-19 could relate to the characters. We also tried to add violence into our film to link with the genre of psychological horror, which we found our target audience enjoy. We did this by using a knife in one of the scenes.
We wanted to use a location that the audience could relate to but also link to the genre of the film. We decided to use the idea of a friends house so that the target audience could relate to the social side of the film but then use the idea of them meeting at night time, to create the horror style. The results from the questionnaire show that our location was successful and linked well to the genre of the film.
One response from our post-film questionnaire stated how we had used a variety of shots to help establish the genre and allow the target audience to enjoy it. One other response stated that they enjoyed the use of sound effects such as the bang and the knife to create a tense and frightening feel.
Some responses stated that there could be improvements to our film. For example, some of the audience didn’t understand the jump cut sequence of pouring the drinks. Another response stated that they disliked the knife scene and thought it was too brief. To improve this next time, we could go into more detail in this scene and possibly add more violence to link closely with our genre.
Some improvements we thought we could make were to make the knife scene at the end of the film last longer and give the audience more of an insight into what happens.
Question 5 Evaluation
After handing out feedback questionnaires and gathering the
responses back we have achieved reaching our target audience. When we asked if
our film relates the age certificate of 15+ 5/7 responses were ‘Yes’ with one
response ‘Possibly’ and one ‘No’.
In order
to do this we added expletive language to the script and added violence into
some parts of the product. The audience also responded with saying ‘Yes’ to the
genre being psychological horror and ‘Yes’ to understanding the storyline.
We had
lot more feedback that commented on more of our successes. For example, one
response identified how we used a variety of shots (i.e long shot, medium close
up, medium shot, medium long shot, establishing shot). We also got a response commenting
on the success of our sound effects such as the bang, and the knife stab. This
adds violence and tension to the film which helps create the enthralling
experience for the audience that psychological horrors should do.
However,
there were improvements that could be made. A few comments were made about the
jump cuts we did when making the drinks. They did not understand the concept of
it therefore next time, we will make sure to complete them to a more successful
level. Surprisingly, a couple of comments were made regarding disliking the
knife scene. In the future, we could put emphasis on this scene as it was very
brief. This would add more violence to our opening part of the film and add
even more support to our genre and create a more psychological horror
experience for the audience.

Question 7 Evaluation
Our preliminary task was a continuity task involving filming
and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a
chair opposite another character, with both characters exchanging a few lines
of dialogue. The task involved the 180 degree rule, match on action and shot
reverse shot. Our main task involved the titles and the opening 2 minutes of a
film.
The planning of our preliminary task was not ideal. Firstly,
we made the dialogue up as we went long therefore it was difficult to portray
the storyline we was trying to get across to the audience whereas in our full
product, we used Celtx to write a script beforehand so we knew exactly what we
was doing. This also allowed our filming to be less time consuming.
